Newtown Neurotics - Wake Up

...

It all begins at school when they tell you you're useless
And the jobs you get offered makes the matter conclusive
For years & years they've been telling you lies
Your full potential's never been realised
And then you slip into the attitude of
'I make a mess of everything I try to do'

Don't sit around; you've got to wake up & live
Don't piss around; you've got to wake up & live

You religiously say it's not worth trying
But christ almighty, do you need enlightening!
I'm not talking about a type of career
I'm talking about just enjoying being here
Make the most of your life everyday
And every opportunity that comes your way

Don't sit around; you've got to wake up & live
Don't piss around; you've got to wake up & live

They've got you exactly where they want you to be
Shackled in feelings of in-a-a-adequacy
It's no fun to hide your feelings inside
Feelings you can't understand or describe
It affects everything that you do
Apathy is slowly killing you

Don't sit around; you've got to wake up & live
Don't piss around; you've got to wake up & live

What have you done? - Yes I'm talking to you
What have you achieved?
Does this question disquieten you
Like it still does me, like it still does me?
You don't own an ounce of self-respect
You don't own an ounce of self-respect
So you're treated like no-one
What did you really expect?
I'm talking to you, I'm talking to you

My first headmaster thought I was not bright.

I had a low IQ until I bought a book on IQ tests and started practising.

Then I had a teacher who told my parents I was bright.

well you appear to be one of the sharper tools in the box to me

dyslexic myself, tested twice & have an educational psychologist report on it plus they gave me £5,000 to compensate for years of dead end jobs
school was hard work as you were just classed as stupid back then

I think our IQ goes up all the time.

oh definitely, I think we're playing catch up & our IQ's are waiting patiently until we get up to speed, schooling was probably the worst thing for it
